St George's Primary School, Portland, Dorset

School Council

The School Council is made up of pupils from St George’s Primary School. A pupil from each class is elected by their classmates – from Foundation Stage to Year Six, to represent the class as the body known as The School Council.

When they meet

The School Council meets once a fortnight with Mr Jameson and Mrs Luxon, other members of the Senior Management Team and occasionally guests to the school. Our headteachers discuss recent and forthcoming events with them and their opinions are sought and listened to.

Their Role

The School Council are essentially the pupil voice of St George’s Primary School. Any important issues the children wish to be addressed are discussed with Mr Jameson and Mrs Luxon at the meetings and then opportunity is given for the children to feedback the conclusions to their peers in class. The School Council are able to influence decisions which directly affect the children of the school. For example, they chose and ordered significant playground and seating equipment including sheltered seating for parents and pupils. They also manage an annual classroom budget and were able to use this to provide their classes with the indoor games resources they specifically wanted for wet play times.

Opening the Co-operative store in Easton The School Council are also pro-active in the community – fundraising and working closely with the PTA. One community event involving the School Council was when they went with Mrs Luxon (Headteacher) to open the co-operative store in Easton.
