Year 6 Newsletter - Autumn Term 2011
Dear Parents
We would like to welcome your children into Year 6 and hope that this will be an enjoyable and successful year for them. They have returned looking very smart in their school uniform and we are grateful for your support in this. Could we remind you that jewellery is not allowed apart from one pair of stud earrings and a watch.
Children should have a separate bag for PE kit, which should be in school every day. PE Kit is a white t-shirt/polo and black/blue shorts. In the colder weather of the winter months we strongly recommend that pupils bring tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirt, as whenever dry we will attempt to wok outside for Games, which involves developing skills in team games. All uniform and PE kit should be clearly labelled with your child’s name and class.
Your child will be given one Literacy homework and one Numeracy homework each week which will enhance and extend work done in school. It is given out on Thursday and should be returned by Tuesday. If there are any problems concerning homework please contact your child’s class teacher. In addition to this there will be spelling lists, times-tables sheets and of course a home reading book.
Our topic this term ‘Around the World’ will begin with a focus on our locality, Portland, including its history and geography. This project will extend to the wider world, and we would like children to focus on a country of their choice and to base a mini research project on this.
Sailing
In addition, the annual Year 6 Sailing days will be this term and the children will be divided into 2 groups. All pupils will experience 3 days at the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy and the opportunity to gain Level 1 RYA Sailing Certificates. We may have the future Olympic Sailing medallists in our Year group! A separate letter has been sent regarding Sailing with the dates relevant for your child.
Our aim at St. George’s is to educate our pupils to be independent, reflective and confident learners, and to prepare children for challenges and learning in later life. We believe that we, the school, need to work together with you, the parents, in partnership to provide and deliver the best opportunities and education for all children. One way of achieving this is to inform and share with parents the skills, areas of study and individual pupil development, regularly. If you ever have a query or worry regarding your own child please do not hesitate to come and speak to your child’s teacher. In addition if you feel you have any resources/artefacts or a knowledge of any topic areas which could add to the experiences being provided at St. George’s Primary please let us know.
